Very interesting premise but a wee bit too dark and violent for me. I should have guessed since it is set during the english civil war, a period I know next to nothing about. I vaguely imagined it to be about Henry VIII trying to break away from the catholic church and there was reference to "Cromwell" but apparently not THAT one. At least I think? Also, Jacob was too infuriating and it made no sense that Christopher was so mad about him though I guess everyone loves a bad boy, including tortured idealistic gay atheists living in the 17th century.
