I read half of this and suddenly could read not one page further. I'm not even sure why. I liked Bowman (ish) and there were so many interesting parts! His time in the navy during WWII, post-war America, the literary scene in New York. I just got really bored after he met Christine and it was a chore to read on, even though I read ahead and some unboring things were just about to happen. Usually it doesn't bother me when nothing really happens. Is it because this about a man rather than a woman? Is it because I don't identify with the plight of the mid century American man? I don't know. Blah.
